Montgomery Lake is a 30-acre lake which straddles the line between the villages of Eldred and Yulan, NY (both which are part of the Town of Highland, NY... the Cuckoo's Nest sits on the Yulan side of the lake). It's one of only three glacier lakes in the area - the others are York Lake and Lake Devenoge - created a millenia ago when glaciers moved through the area. The receding glaciers dug deep holes into the earth and broke open underground springs which still feed the lake today.
Montgomery is a non-motorboat lake that is rumored to be approximately 50 feet deep at its center. It's at the top of its chain, meaning that no other lakes drain into it... one, small brook and rainwater are the only feeds into the lake outside of the springs. This means the water is exceptionally clean... it makes for awesome swimming and fishing.
A view from on the water, August 2007.
